 Monkeydooz 2017

MonkeyDooz Kids Art Show

Art canvasses will be available for pick up at MonkeyDooz (1325 Aaron Drive, Richland) beginning Wednesday, July 19th at 9:00 am. Anyone under 18 is eligible to receive a canvas provided by MonkeyDooz and MonkeyDooz Teen Salon while supplies last. Decorate the canvas any way you like to go with the theme: Build a Better World. Bring the canvas back to the library by Wednesday, August 23rd to be a part of the MonkeyDooz Kids Art Show in September.

Therapy Dog Reading:  Jack & Scout

Most Tuesdays at 10:00 am

Jack & Scout are Golden Retrievers and registered Therapy Dogs.  They love kid and they love stories.  They visit some Friday mornings at 10:00 also.  Stop by to read them a story.  Watch for the chance to earn a Therapy Dog Library Card this summer.  Check the calendar for days and times of other dogs.

Spinners, weavers, knitters and other fiber artists will be here working on projects. You are welcome to bring in a projects of your own to work on, ask questions or just watch.

  Saturday Morning Art Group
This month we will meet at the library to make a simple sketchbook. We will follow with some prompts to get you started sketching in it. You can sketch either inside or outside the library. Bring your own art supplies or borrow some of ours. Bring suggestions of what you would like from the group. All ages welcome but children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

  Mini Drone Demo & Race
Members of the Atomic City Drone Club will be here with drone exhibits, mini drone demos and mini drone races. You will have a chance to see what the drone sees or be a virtual drone passenger, ask questions about 3D printers and how they are used in drone building. Members will be on hand to answer your questions. Drop in or stay the whole time.

  POPP (stuffed) Pet Adoption Day
Ellen from Pet OverPopulation Prevention will be here with some foster dogs for kids to meet. Kids can learn about the process of adopting a pet by adopting a stuffed animal from the POPP table. We will have therapy dogs available to share stories with and kids can make a pet toy to take home or to donate to the animal shelter. This program is in memory of Sebastian and Gunner Tindall. Sebastian was a longtime volunteer in the Therapy Dog Reading Program and Gunner was our first Registered Therapy Dog to come to listen to kids read. All the stuffed animals up for adoption were donated to the library from Sebastian’s estate.

Join Academy of Children’s Theatre (ACT) in the children’s story area for an interactive participatory workshop on how to be a Jedi. This will be a sneak preview of an upcoming class at ACT. Preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult.

This month we will be painting and decorating rocks. We will be using acrylic paint, Sharpies and possibly glue so wear clothes you don't mind getting messy. You can decorate a rock to keep or to leave for someone else to find. We will have books for inspiration if you are not sure what to paint. Bring suggestions of what you would like to do at future art group sessions. All ages welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Use your canvas to create your own vision of the theme *Build a Better World* and return it to the Richland Public Library by August 23rd to be part of the 2017 MonkeyDooz Kids Art Show

Reach Museum Grounds (1943 Columbia Park Trail, Richland)

We will meet at the Reach Museum and sketch on the grounds. There is a pond with a trail around it, a trail between the museum and the road with an art display of local animals plus the architectural elements of the museum itself. Please park on the far edge of the parking lot as the museum will be open and we don’t want to interfere with their regular traffic. Bring your own art supplies or borrow some of ours. All ages and experience levels are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult. Please note, we will be sketching on the museum grounds only, not inside the building.

Meet the people and departments that keep the city running. See some of the city trucks up close. Learn about crime prevention from the Police Department. The library will have a table with a craft to make and take home. There will be entertainment, giveaways, activities, raffles and more. Plus we will raffle off some of our Bikes for Books!

  Solar Eclipse Viewing
John Dam Plaza

Come to the park to view the eclipse. If you have received eclipse glasses at programs earlier in the summer, please bring them. We will have a limited number of eclipse glasses to give out. It will not be safe to view the eclipse with the naked eye. We will also have both active and quiet activities to keep the kids busy while the moon slowly covers the sun during the day. Please note that we will see a partial eclipse locally. The total eclipse will be viewable from some places in Oregon. Special thanks to LIGO and the Tri-City Astronomy Club for their help with this program.
