2017 RPL Adult Summer Reading Program

Adults aged 18 and up are eligible!

  • Sign up for RPL’s Summer Reading Program at the Help Desk beginning JUNE 8th.
  • COMPLETE the Reading Program Grid sheet to be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing. Must be turned in by AUGUST 31st to be entered. Grand Prize kindly donated by Friends of Richland Public Library.
  • Turn in book reviews for each book you read or listen to—even if they don’t fill squares in your Reading Program Grid sheet—to enter Super Community Prize drawings of YOUR CHOICE! Complete as many book reviews as you like. Extra review sheets can be picked up at the Reference Desk. Prizes kindly donated by Porter’s Real BBQ, Ariel Gourmet & Gifts, Frost Me Sweet, Yellow Dog Studio, ACT, Atomic Ale & Monterosso’s, 3 Margaritas, Allied Arts, Baan Khun Ya Thai, Greenies, Bookmark Café, and Budd’s Broiler.
  • Optional: COMPLETE the Citizen’s Activity Sheet for an additional entry into the Grand Prize Drawing! Must be turned in by AUGUST 31st to be entered.

Spinners, weavers, knitters and other fiber artists will be here working on projects. You are welcome to bring in a projects of your own to work on, ask questions or just watch.

  Saturday Morning Art Group
This month we will meet at the library to make a simple sketchbook. We will follow with some prompts to get you started sketching in it. You can sketch either inside or outside the library. Bring your own art supplies or borrow some of ours. Bring suggestions of what you would like from the group. All ages welcome but children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Join us at local parks for a series of sketch days. Bring your own supplies or borrow some of ours. All ages welcome. Please turn in a sketch so we can put it on display at the library in September.

  Mini Drone Demo & Race
Members of the Atomic City Drone Club will be here with drone exhibits, mini drone demos and mini drone races. You will have a chance to see what the drone sees or be a virtual drone passenger, ask questions about 3D printers and how they are used in drone building. Members will be on hand to answer your questions. Drop in or stay the whole time.

This month we will be painting and decorating rocks. We will be using acrylic paint, Sharpies and possibly glue so wear clothes you don't mind getting messy. You can decorate a rock to keep or to leave for someone else to find. We will have books for inspiration if you are not sure what to paint. Bring suggestions of what you would like to do at future art group sessions. All ages welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult

Reach Museum Grounds (1943 Columbia Park Trail, Richland)

We will meet at the Reach Museum and sketch on the grounds. There is a pond with a trail around it, a trail between the museum and the road with an art display of local animals plus the architectural elements of the museum itself. Please park on the far edge of the parking lot as the museum will be open and we don’t want to interfere with their regular traffic. Bring your own art supplies or borrow some of ours. All ages and experience levels are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult. Please note, we will be sketching on the museum grounds only, not inside the building.

  National Night Out and City Fair
John Dam Plaza

Meet the people and departments that keep the city running. See some of the city trucks up close. Learn about crime prevention from the Police Department. The library will have a table with a craft to make and take home. There will be entertainment, giveaways, activities, raffles and more. Plus we will raffle off some of our Bikes for Books!

August 5

  Public Art Sketch Tour
Tree of Seasons Sculpture @ the Parkway

The Public Art Tour will begin at the Tree of Seasons sculpture in the Parkway at 10:00 am. The tour will end in John Dam Plaza with time for participants to sketch. Bring your own supplies or borrow some of ours. Be sure to turn in a sketch to go in the art display at the library in September.

  Get Ready for the Eclipse
Join LIGO and the Tri-City Astronomy Club to make sure you are prepared for optimum viewing of the eclipse Monday, August 21st. We will have information on the eclipse, hands on activities and possibly even some telescopes to demonstrate safe viewing of the sun.

 August 21

  Solar Eclipse Viewing
John Dam Plaza

Come to the park to view the eclipse. If you have received eclipse glasses at programs earlier in the summer, please bring them. We will have a limited number of eclipse glasses to give out. It will not be safe to view the eclipse with the naked eye. We will also have both active and quiet activities to keep the kids busy while the moon slowly covers the sun during the day. Please note that we will see a partial eclipse locally. The total eclipse will be viewable from some places in Oregon. Special thanks to LIGO and the Tri-City Astronomy Club for their help with this program.

August 21

  Skate Party
Rollarena Skating Center, 849 Stevens Drive, Richland

Be sure to bring the ticket you earned through the Summer Reading Program! This is an all ages skate party for the 2017 Build a Better World Summer Reading Program.
