Teen Summer Reading Spark a Reaction

Help “Spark a Reaction @ Your Library” this summer by participating in the Richland Public Library’s Teen Summer Reading Program. Sign-ups are June 2 - August 2 and the program ends August 23. You can earn prizes by tracking your reading and attending special events which include Mini Catapults, a Forensic Science Demonstration, Recycled Material Crafts, a Community Clean-up, Comic Book Workshop, and the Doctor Who Party.

Teen Summer Reading Programs

Mini Catapult
Competition
(Grades 6-12)

June 18
2:00-4:00 PM

We will construct small catapults from rubber bands and wooden tongue depressors
(say ahh). Then, using small projectiles, participants will attempt to knock over stacks of materials to win prizes. Door prizes, snacks, and water.

Forensic Science Demonstration
(Grades 6-12)

June 25, 3:30-5:30 PM

Crime Prevention Officer Rick Kane will be coming to the library to teach about methods for crime solving including blood spatter analysis, fingerprinting, lifting latent prints, casting, and how to acquire and preserve DNA evidence.
He will also discuss arson investigation.

Recycled Materials Crafts
(Grades 6-12)

July 16
 2:00-4:00 PM

There will be three different crafts including reusable bags from old t-shirts (bring your own or whatever we have around), paper roses from old books, and pixie jars (mason jar lanterns using glow paint). Door prizes, snacks, and water.

Trail Clean-up
(Grades 6-12
parents welcome)

July 26
8:00-11:00 AM

Help us improve the Tri-Cities environment by cleaning up trash along the Sacajawea Trail between the I-182 Bridge and the Columbia Park Trail
Ben Franklin Transit depot. Trash bags, gloves, and refreshments will be provided.
Sign-ups begin June 26 and space is limited.

Comic Book Workshop
(Grades 6-12)

August 6
2:00-4:00 PM

Come join humorous local comic book artist JR Guffey to learn about the various drawing techniques used to craft your own comic books. Pencils, paper, and erasers will be provided. Door prizes, snacks, and drinks included.

Doctor Who Party (Grades 6-12)

August 23 2:00-4:00 PM

Hop in your TARDIS and come to the library for a grand bash. The Gallery will be decked out Whovian style with plenty of food including subway sandwiches, chips, and Dalek desserts. We will have a create-your-own-doctor contest. There will also be a costume contest, photo scavenger hunt, cardboard standups for taking your photo with the Doctor and his TARDIS, prizes galore, and more all set to the Doctor Who soundtrack collection.
